30 Days of Me…. Day 2

23 Aug

Yes folks, day 2 already of the 30 Days challenge. Aren’t you exited? No? Please yourself…

Day 02- The meaning behind your Blog name

Sherlock Holmes as depicted in The Strand magazine

When I started this blog I wanted something that was a little different from my usual identity. My ‘Avalard’ branding is ubiquitous, but doesn’t always work. I’ll have to rename or close some of the other sites in due course. I wanted this blog to be freer, to reflect my personal interests, my rants and my passions. Something slightly eclectic, eccentric, nostalgic…

‘The Sherlock Holmes English-Speaking Vernacular’ works on various levels. I’ve been a Holmes admirer since I was a kid, I’m an English speaker and ‘vernacular’ is a wonderfully archaic word now. I never hear it used in common parlance. Its also one of the fictional organisations cited by The Kinks in their track ‘The Village Green Preservation Society’ from the album of the same name, released in 1967. I’m a Kinks fan, and VGPS is one of my all-time favourite albums. A wonderful album that deals with an image of Britishness, of Englishness, a lost Englishness at that.

I’ve been described as a ‘professional nostalgist’ – that is, I seem to have cultivated a living for myself from an indulgence in the past. No bad thing. But a line referring to a Victorian literary creation from a swinging sixties song echoed in a blog by a 20 something (ie. still a young fellah) in the 21st century is rather perfect for my life.

I also enjoy jam, marmalade, Fu Manchu, Dracula, village greens, box brownies, real ale, tudor houses, can’t abide skyscrapers, office blocks, digital excess….

WTF?…
